The Jawa Pitu
Band
The Jawa Pitu Band play dangdut — music originating from 1970s Indonesia which is a heady mix of Hindustani, Malay, Arabic and Western music. They play their own version of dangdut with additional inspiration from western jazz/groove and also Indonesian gamelan music.
The Jawa Pitu Band have been performing in festivals and venues around Melbourne since 2014. They have played at the Brunswick Music Festival, The Village Festival, the Folk Rhythm and Life Festival, Sydney Road Street Party and many others.
All members of the band area seasoned musicians, as evident from the tight professional sound the band, bringing together persuasion breakdowns and jazz-funk improvisations with traditional Indonesian dangdut. The band consists of Yana Lestari and Pipin Jamison on vocals, with Musa Kanda on percussion (gamelan saron, darbuka, riq, gendang), Dzullah Mohd Pilus on drums, Ascelin Gordon on guitar and Brett Johnson on fretless bass.
